During a routine dental cleaning, the hygienist uses special tools to remove sticky plaque and hard tartar deposits from the surfaces of your teeth above your gums. These cleanings are very important for preventing gum disease and even for treating very mild forms of the disease (called gingivitis). There are three main types of dental cleanings: prophylaxis cleaning, scaling and root planning, and gross debridement. While they all accomplish essentially the same thing —cleaner teeth — they are performed differently and for different reasons. Dentists generally recommend you have your teeth cleaned every six months (twice a year). However, in some cases more frequent cleanings can positively benefit your oral health specially if you have periodontal disease.
